🌏 KOSPI +3.68% — when one market runs alone
Seoul jumped 4.6% while the rest of Asia barely moved — today's chart shows how to spot a local story. Plus Vietnam takes its turn in the SEA watch.
Numbers compiled Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at 4:45 pm in Seoul (UTC+9). Tokyo's and Seoul's closes are final; Hong Kong and Singapore were still trading at press time, and their rows say so.
Seoul's KOSPI closed up 3.68% — its third straight gain — while every other market in the region finished within one percent of flat, and that gap is today's whole lesson. The confirmed close: 6,579.04, up 233.51 points (3.68%), led by Samsung Electronics (+6.68%) and SK hynix (+5.54%).
📊 The Dashboard — Wednesday, 12 August 2026
| Gauge | Level | Move | What this means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nikkei 225 (Japan) | 67,699 | 🟢 ▲ +0.8% | Closed, final. Tokyo reopened after Tuesday's holiday and quietly caught up with two days of news — technology and bank shares did the lifting. |
| KOSPI (South Korea) | 6,635 | 🟢 ▲ +3.68% | Closed, final. A very large one-day move for a major index, driven almost entirely by chipmakers — the story below. |
| Hang Seng (Hong Kong) | ≈25,415 | 🔴 ▼ ~0.9% | Still trading at press time — treat as provisional. Hong Kong sat out the chip excitement and drifted lower for a second day. |
| USD/JPY | 159.4 | ⚪ ≈ flat | The yen barely moved. Currency traders are waiting for tonight's US inflation number before taking a side. |
| USD/KRW | 1,419 | 🔴 ▲ +0.5% | A higher number means a weaker won — yes, on the same day Korean stocks surged. The two gauges answer different questions, and today they disagreed. |
🌏 The SEA watch — this week's number: Vietnam's VN-Index
The rotation moves from Jakarta (last issue) to Ho Chi Minh City. Minutes before the close, the VN-Index stood at 1,788, up 0.8% on the day — near-final, not the official print — and the currency leaned the same mild way: USD/VND around 26,090, the dollar down about 0.2%, which means a slightly firmer dong. Run yesterday's check: both gauges agree, calmly, pointing up. That is what an unstressed day looks like on the page.
The longer view is why Vietnam has a seat in this rotation at all. The VN-Index set its all-time high of 1,936.55 in May, had a rough July, and now sits about 7.7% below that peak — yet it is still up roughly 11% over the past year. Both facts are true at once: whether Vietnam reads as "cooling off" or "having a great year" depends entirely on how far back you stand. Holding both distances in view at the same time is the reading skill.
⭐ Spotlight: US CPI — 3.5%, with a fresh reading tonight
The US Consumer Price Index measures how fast prices are rising for American households, quoted as a yearly rate: the June reading was 3.5%, down from 4.2% in May, and forecasters' consensus for tonight's July figure is 3.4%. The whole world watches this one American number because the US central bank sets interest rates against it, and those rates pull on nearly every gauge in our table — the dollar, the yen, the won. Tonight's release lands at 9:30 pm Seoul time; the number matters less than its distance from that 3.4% expectation, because markets have already positioned for the expected part.
📈 Chart of the Day — one board, two stories

How to read this: cover the KOSPI bar with your thumb and the board shows an ordinary mixed day, everything inside ±1%. When one bar towers over neighbors like that, the driver is usually local, not global — a story about that market, not about the world. Today's local story was chips: Samsung Electronics rose 6.7%, SK hynix 5.3%, and SK Square 8.6%, with foreign investors buying heavily from the opening bell (361.6 billion won of net purchases in the first hour alone) amid reports, summarized by Trading Economics, that Singapore's state investor Temasek is considering direct investments in the two big chipmakers. Note one more thing the board tells you: the won weakened slightly on the same day — a stock index and its currency answer different questions, so they are allowed to disagree.
📅 Tonight, then tomorrow
The week's anchor lands tonight: the US July inflation report at 9:30 pm Seoul time, consensus 3.4% after June's 3.5%. Asia gets its first full session to react tomorrow morning — recall Tuesday's lesson: the open prices the overnight news in one jump, so expect tomorrow's first hour to be a verdict on tonight's number. In the background, oil above $83 on Strait of Hormuz tensions is still quietly feeding every import bill in this region.
